Homestead is FPL territory, with 1:1 net metering and a $30 minimum bill, and it is the sunniest Miami-Dade city we cover (5.7 peak sun hours a day). And it has a history with hurricanes that still defines how roofs are built. Here is what matters before you get a quote.
Which utility serves Homestead, and does 1:1 net metering apply?
FPL serves Homestead and south Miami-Dade, and applies 1:1 net metering: each kWh you export is credited at the same value as one you buy. Monthly surplus rolls to the next month, and in December FPL pays the leftover at its COG-1 rate (average cost of generation), far below the full retail rate. Two limits: the system must be estimated below 115% of your annual consumption, and the bill never goes below the $30 minimum bill plus taxes. How much does a solar system cost in Homestead in 2026?
There is no public, verifiable price per watt for Homestead alone, and we will not invent one. The sourced reference is the Florida average: $2.71 per installed watt before incentives, according to SolarReviews (updated October 2026). Installer travel distance and the HVHZ permit can push your price above that average.
| Size (Florida average, SolarReviews Oct. 2026) | Cost before incentives |
|---|---|
| 5 kW ($3.00/W) | ≈$15,000 |
| 10 kW ($2.52/W) | ≈$25,200 |
The totals are our own arithmetic: the cost per watt SolarReviews publishes for each size, multiplied by the size. New, large homes with pools and high usage call for bigger systems; that size is not a target. Yours comes from your 12 bills. How the price is built: solar panel cost in Florida 2026.
Heads up: the 30% federal credit for purchases (25D) ended for systems placed in service after 12/31/2025; only 48E for lease/PPA continues through the end of 2027, and the third party captures it. An “after 30%” quote in 2026 is not a purchase. Confirm with your tax preparer.
How many sun hours does Homestead get?
Homestead receives 5.7 peak sun hours per day on a fixed-tilt panel, per TurbineGenerator, versus 5.2 in Miami and Hialeah. A peak sun hour is one equivalent hour of full irradiance. Half a point more sun is close to 10% more production per installed kW: it partly offsets the higher price per watt. A 10 kW system yields on the order of 57 kWh on an average day before losses.
What is the typical bill?
There is no public, verifiable average bill for Homestead alone. As a reference, the average Florida household used 1,104 kWh a month and paid $156.09 in 2024, according to EIA, and the state’s average residential price was 15.03¢/kWh in July 2026. Homestead’s newer subdivisions have two-story homes with two AC units: $300-400 summer bills are the complaint we hear most. How to read each line: how to read your FPL bill.
Roof and hurricanes in Homestead
Homestead was the epicenter of Andrew in 1992, which is why south Miami-Dade builds to the toughest code in the country: High Velocity Hurricane Zone, 175 mph design wind. For panels that means product-approved mounting (Florida Product Approval or NOA), calculations stamped by a Florida engineer and strict inspection. The good news: nearly every Homestead home is post-Andrew and already has a code-compliant roof and structure, the best foundation for a solar system. The bad news: roofs in the 2004-2008 subdivisions are reaching 20 years. If yours is in that window, roof first. More in solar and hurricanes in Florida.
HOAs in Homestead
Nearly every Homestead subdivision has an HOA. Florida Statute 163.04 prevents them from prohibiting solar collectors or having rules that effectively do so. They can require architectural approval and set placement as long as it does not reduce output (south or within 45° east or west). Bring the layout and orientation; it is usually settled in one meeting.
Is solar subscription available in Homestead?
Not yet. Our subscription partner operates in Central Florida (Orlando, Kissimmee, the Tampa area). In Homestead the options are purchase, loan, PACE or lease/PPA; we compare them in solar subscription: how it works.
When solar does NOT make sense in Homestead
- Bill under $100: the $30 minimum bill plus taxes leaves little to save.
- A 2004-2008 roof that has not been inspected: roof inspection first.
- Shade from a two-story neighbor on your south face (common on narrow lots).
- A move in 1-2 years on 20-25 year financing.
What to check before deciding
- Your 12 FPL bills with the 13-month chart.
- That the quote states $/W and includes the HVHZ permit and engineering.
- That the system is below 115% of your annual consumption.
- Roof age and condition, with attic photos if possible.
- Your HOA’s architectural application.
